Topic of the Week – True Love is the Love for the Truth in Christ
“Especially in our day when everything is considered relative, even in the ecclesiastical domain, persistence in the tradition of the Saints is the most substantial counteraction against the general decline, even if such a position is ridiculed as lacking love. True love is the love for the truth in Christ.”
‘’I Confess One Baptism…’’, Protopresbyter George Metallinos, p 115
Adult/Family:
“…He who believes in the Lord Christ continually grows by His Truth into its divine infinity; grows with all his being, his mind, heart and soul. Thus he lives constantly by Christ’s Truth, as it constitutes life itself in Christ. Life in Christ is life in truth (Eph. 4:15), a constant abiding with all our being in the truth of Christ.
Preschool/Elementary/Middle School:
High School:
“If the fervour of faith in the heart is not sometimes stirred up, then in time, through negligence, faith may become entirely extinguished in us; and Christianity with its Sacraments may entirely die for us. The enemy takes pains to attain this end, and tries to extinguish faith in our hearts and to bury in oblivion all the truths of Christianity. That is why we see men who, being Christians, are only such in name, while by their actions they are quite heathen.”
St John of Kronstadt: My Life in Christ, page 5
What are some recent issues/situations that have come up in the media and in the Church where people are being accused of not having love for their fellow man? What do the saints (either the holy fathers from previous centuries or modern saints) say about these issues? Is there a stand that is the love for the truth in Christ? Is there a stand that is just love of something/someone else with no regard for Christ?
When you are evaluating a situation, you should seek out the tradition of the saints (both early and modern) and see how they have stood in the love for the Truth in Christ and you should base your actions/thoughts on the Truth in Christ also, even if you will be accused of lacking love.
A Message from Maria Spanos
I am passionate about our Orthodox Christian faith and seek to help others learn as much as they can about it. My purpose here is to share online resources that help strengthen our relationship with Christ and bind us closer to His Church. I believe they are invaluable in learning about our precious Orthodox Tradition, and are a great aid for teaching family members, friends and others about Orthodoxy. ~Maria
Two of my favorite quotes:
“A true Christian behaves in this life so that it may be a preparation for the future one and not only a life here below. In his actions, he does not think what will be said of him here but of what will be said there in heaven; he represents to himself that he is always in the presence of God, of the angels and all the saints, and remembers that someday they will bear witness of his thoughts, words, and deeds.” — Saint John of Kronstadt
